Indian Department Opens Portal for RTI Applications

12 April 2013

A key Indian agency has opened a website for the submission of right to information requests and fees.

The portal — http://www.rtionline.gov.in/ — has been created by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the agency which leads on the administration of the RTI law.

The portal is not for use in filing requests for all government agencies, however. It’s use is limited to requests and first appeals to the DoPT. Requesters also can  pay fees via the site.

The application form has been limited to 500 characters. For longer filings it will be necessary to upload a PDF attachment in the “Supporting Document” column.

Submitters will receive a unique registration number which can be used to check the status of the RTI application.

Wider use of the site is contemplated, however.

“The government will extend this facility to all its ministries and offices in the national capital by this month end,” the official said, according to a report in the Times of India.
