A top official of Venezuela has announced plans to begin consideration of a Draft Organic Law of Transparency and Access to Public Information.
The draft text (in Spanish) was introduced by the second vice president of the National Assembly, deputy Simon Calzadilla, who said the draft will go a joint committee composed of the Finance Committee, Comptroller and guests of the media commission, according to a report by Transparencia Venezuela. The announcement was made during a meeting with members of various organizations of civil society.
The Coalition Proacceso, a national organization, has been pushing for adoption of a law. Venezuela is among the only three countries in Latin America that does not have an access law.
Executive Director of Transparency Venezuela Mercedes De Freitas described the draft, which is adapted from the model law of the Organization of American States (OAS).
