A freedom of information bill may get debated in coming weeks in the Philippines House of Representatives.
The legislation (House Bill No. 5801) recently was cleared on second reading by the Committee on Public Information, which first approved it late last year. Two committees that considered the bill have filed their reports.
Congress is expected to adjourn June 11.
Rep. Barry Gutierrez said: “We are looking forward to the plenary debates on the bill which are certainly bound to be challenging.”
In past years, FOI bills have failed to get through in the final days despite apparently widespread support among House members.
The congressional supporters of the bill released a joint statement.
