Rwanda Groups Establish Site for Making Access Requests

29 January 2015

A new web portal established by Rwandan nongovernmental organizations will facilitate access to information.

The new web portal is designed to provide an online channel for inquiries to be submitted straight to information officers.

The website, Sobanukirwa, makes it possible to make requests anonymously.

Sobanukirwa is translated into English, French and Kinyarwanda.

Fredrick Akaranganwa, the Head of Programme at the Open Democracy and Sustainable Development Initiative (ODESUDI), said:

The existence of the law is not enough without implementation of what is stipulated in it. The advantage in this is that people also get to know their right to information and where to find particular information they want.

The portal was built by ODESUDI and Tumenye, a Kigali-based civic technology organization. They worked with the Office of the Ombudsman.

The 2013 access to information law came into force in February 2013.
