The information commissioner of the Canadian province of Ontario has found that a top government official improperly deleted emails.
Commissioner Ann Cavoukian said in a report that the chief of staff to the former minister of energy violated the Archives and Recordkeeping Act (ARA) and the records retention schedule developed for ministers’ offices by the Archives of Ontario, according to an announcement.
The emails concerned the cancellation and relocation of the several gas plants.
The report includes numerous recommendations for changing practices in government offices and for legislation.
One proposal for amending the laws is to “create a legislative duty to document communications and business-related activities within FIPPA and MFIPPA; including a duty to accurately document key decisions.” FIPPA is the Freedom of Information and Protection of Personal Privacy Act and MFIPPA is the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Personal Privacy Act
