The Bahamian Senate on Feb. 23 approved a freedom of information bill, setting the stage for action in the House of Assembly.
The bill was a newly modified version. (See previous FreedomInfo.org reports.) A copy of the latest bill is here.
Attorney General John Delaney led debate, according to an account by Taneka Thompson in the Nassau Guardian.
Among other things, he explained that the modified bill will leave the effective date open, subject to the discretion of the government, in order to allow officials time to be prepared.
The latest proposal also reduced the fine for noncompliance from $100,000 to $10,000. Use of the law will be restricted to Bahamians or permanent residents.
