The Organization of American States has taken the last step in the approval process for a model freedom of information law.
The OAS General Assembly approved a resolution on the text of the model law in June 2010 and requested a meeting at which the states could present final changes in December. Since no changes were presented at the December meeting, the text remains as it appeared in the resolution in June.
The model law can be found on the OAS Access to Information web page in English and Spanish.
The website also contains a 61-page “Commentary and Guide for Implementation for the Model InterAmerican Law on Access to Information.”
The model law was developed by a group of experts, whose names appear on the website, along with minutes of the meetings.
